The ACP is run by the Members* through their volunteer service contributions.
What is a Member? ACP Membership is a service role, with members contributing their diverse expertise and skills in support of the mission of the Center. These skills include scientific vision, community building, communication and outreach, fundraising, administration, and IT.
What do Members do? Members help guide the scientific direction of the Center, participate in the organization of ACP activities, serve as ACP ambassadors to the community, fundraise for the Center, and oversee all aspects of the Center’s activities. Members are expected to help increase ACP diversity and reach in all dimensions—including promoting new scientific directions and reaching out to new scientific communities—and to be familiar with the Center and to participate in its activities.
Specific formal responsibilities include reviewing applications for summer participants and workshop proposals for the Summer and Winter Programs, overseeing the upkeep of and improvements to Center facilities, recruiting speakers for colloquia and public talks, developing and overseeing the operation of the Center’s computing operations, fundraising for the Center and attending to its financial management, and engaging in long-range planning. These activities represent tens to over 100 hours of effort per person per year.
In nominating new Scientific Members, we aim to identify outstanding scientists who are passionate about the ACP and are willing to volunteer significant time to contribute to many aspects of the Center’s operations. We are interested in people with a strong commitment to diversity in all its dimensions and, where possible, a demonstrated track record of enabling a culture that honors the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. New Members have typically participated in the Center’s programs more than once, have shown a strong interest in furthering its programs (including the introduction of new research areas), have often been leaders in summer workshops or winter conferences, and are tenured (where tenure applies). If you have suggestions for new General Members, please contact the current ACP President.
*The use of the term “Member” derives from the language used in Colorado non-profit law and DOES NOT indicate that ACP is a club. Members are responsible for the overall policies and direction of the Center’s program, and with the election of the Trustees who legally run the Center’s operations, as specified in the Center’s Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws and Colorado law. Members rotate, serving limited terms, to ensure that new ideas, areas of physics, and communities are represented.
