Local Transportation

Aspen is a very walkable and pedestrian friendly town with numerous flashing crosswalk signs and roads with no thru traffic, making it easy to get around town safely. Nevertheless, both the city and the Aspen Center for Physics offer numerous resources for local transportation:

  • Check out a bike from the ACP bike fleet. Learn more about renting a bike from ACP here.
  • WeCycle allows you to check out a bike from a transit station for free for 30 minutes, There is a fee for rides longer than 30 minutes. WeCycle also provides e-bikes in their fleet, which you can see the locations of in the app.
  • RFTA is a free bus system between Aspen and Snowmass (see more below).
  • Downtowner App is a tip based ride service in the downtown core. (Similar to Uber, but subsidized by the City of Aspen for short trips in town.)
  • High Mountain Taxi. This is the local affordable taxi company.
  • Uber and Lyft have some cars in the Aspen area but are not as frequent as in major cities.
  • Rental cars are available at the Aspen Airport.
  • Turo is a car-sharing service.
  • Cars to Go.
  • NOTE: Use the PayByPhone App or the parking meters when parking in town.

Free Bus System - RFTA

There is a free bus from the Aspen airport to the Aspen Center for Physics. Plan your route with Google Maps or the Transit app, or use the RFTA trip planner. Typically, a bus comes every 15-20 minutes, depending on the season. You can get on the “BRT”, “L”, or “SM” at the airport, and get off at the “Hallam Street + 8th” stop to walk a few blocks to the Center.

There is also a “Crosstown Shuttle,” which has a stop next to the Physics Center and goes to the center of town. It typically runs ever 30 minutes. (Click “Cross Town” on the menu bar on this page to see the schedule: https://www.rfta.com/routes/city-of-aspen/ )
