Tiziana DiMatteo

Tiziana Di Matteo is a Professor of Physics and Director of the McWilliams Center for Cosmology and Astrophysics at Carnegie Mellon University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, then served as a Chandra Fellow at Harvard and as junior faculty at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Germany. A leading theorist in high-energy astrophysics and cosmology, Di Matteo pioneered the introduction of quasar and black hole feedback into galaxy-formation simulations, establishing the now-foundational picture in which energy from growing black holes self-regulates both quasar and galaxy growth. She uses large-scale supercomputing—and increasingly artificial intelligence—to simulate galaxy formation and the growth of massive black holes from cosmic dawn to the present day, and is the architect of the MassiveBlack, BlueTides, and ASTRID simulations, among the largest cosmological hydrodynamic simulations ever run. She also serves as a Scientific Editor for the Astrophysical Journal and Astrophysical Journal Letters, premier publications of the American Astronomical Society, and as PI of the Simons Foundation’s Keystone Astronomy and AI (KAAI) Fellows program, training the next generation of scientists at the interface of astronomy and artificial intelligence. Di Matteo is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has been honored with the Pittsburgh Foundation’s Urania E. Stott Fellowship, the Albert Shimmins International and Lyle Fellowships at the University of Melbourne, and the Carnegie Science Center’s Award for Excellence. Among her many service roles, she has served on the NSF Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastructure, is an elected Council Member of the LISA Consortium, and is a member of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration.
