Meet Our Physicists
Ravindra N. Bhatt
Ravindra N. Bhatt is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Princeton University. He received his B.Sc. Honours degree with Distinction in Physics from the University of Delhi, India, in 1971. He received his master’s (1974) and Ph.D. (1976) in Physics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Bhatt’s research is in theoretical condensed matter physics, especially dealing with disordered, correlated, and topological systems. Most recently, he has been working on applying computational techniques for fractional quantum Hall and other two-dimensional topological systems.
Bhatt was Director of the Princeton Center for Complex Materials (1999-2005), Faculty Fellow and Acting Associate Director of the Princeton Center for Theoretical Science (2005-2012), and prior to joining Princeton, Head of Theoretical Physics Research at AT&T Bell Laboratories.
Bhatt is a Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science (2004), and of the American Physical Society (1986). He is a recipient of the Individual & Group Performance Awards from AT&T Bell Laboratories (1987-1989); of the Indian Physics Association’s Award for Contributions to Physics, American Chapter (1992); of the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (1995); and of the Sigma Xi Award for Contributions to Science Education (2002). Bhatt has also received the Science and Engineering Research Council, (SERC) Senior Visiting Fellowship, United Kingdom (1984) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Senior Visiting Fellowship, United Kingdom (2000).
Bhatt has been a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (2013-14, 2019-20), and has held visiting appointments at MIT, ITP-UC Santa Barbara, Imperial College (London), Newton Institute (Cambridge), École Normale (Paris), University of Karlsruhe (Germany), ICTP (Trieste), IISc (Bangalore), and TIFR (Bombay).

Condensed Matter Physics: the First Fifty Years
By Ravindra N. Bhatt
Condensed Matter Physics, or Solid State Physics as it was then called, had a slow start in early years of the Aspen Center of Physics (ACP). Much of the activity during the first decade involved participation by a few key players who, convinced of the unity of all subfields of physics, decided to participate in activities at the Center,
